Clinical Rotations
Our Addiction Medicine Fellowship offers a diverse and immersive training experience across hospital, outpatient, and community-based settings. Fellows develop clinical expertise, leadership skills, and a deep understanding of the social and systemic factors that impact individuals with substance use disorders.
1. Addiction Medicine Consult Service (On-Call) — Longitudinal (~3 months)
A cornerstone of our program is the Addiction Medicine Consult Service through the Baptist Center of Excellence in Addiction Medicine. Fellows provide 24/7 telemedicine consultations for patients with substance use disorders across 16 Baptist hospitals.
While on call, fellows deliver timely and compassionate consultations, rapidly develop treatment plans, and collaborate with multidisciplinary hospital teams to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.
2. Outpatient Substance Use Clinic — 4 months
The Outpatient Substance Use Disorder Clinic serves as the fellowship’s primary training site and home base. In partnership with the Federally Qualified Health Center ARcare, fellows manage both continuity and outpatient clinic patients.
They provide comprehensive, longitudinal care — from initial assessment to ongoing treatment — while honing their ability to build trust, address co-occurring conditions, and support recovery with empathy and clinical excellence.
3. Psychiatry — 1 month
During the Psychiatry rotation, fellows gain experience in diagnosing and managing co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. This rotation emphasizes trauma-informed care and interdisciplinary collaboration, preparing fellows to treat complex psychiatric presentations with confidence and compassion.
4. Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program — 1 month
At Behavioral Health Group (BHG), the region’s only methadone clinic, fellows gain hands-on experience in opioid agonist therapy. They learn to manage patients receiving methadone and deepen their understanding of medication-assisted treatment as a cornerstone of recovery.
5. Sickle Cell Clinic — 1 month
Fellows in the Sickle Cell Clinic care for patients with complex pain and high hospitalization rates. Through collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, fellows learn to balance medical management with psychosocial support, cultivating the skills to provide holistic, equitable care for this unique patient population.
6. Community Outreach Medicine — 1 month
This rotation immerses fellows in community-based addiction and recovery services across multiple sites:
-
The Hospitality Hub: A wraparound service organization helping individuals experiencing homelessness achieve stable housing and improved health.
-
The Wellness and Stress Clinic of Memphis: Provides free primary care, case management, and social and legal services for uninsured residents.
-
City of Jackson Recovery Court: Offers treatment and intensive case management for justice-involved individuals with substance use disorders, supporting rehabilitation and community reintegration.
These experiences underscore the fellowship’s commitment to addressing social determinants of health and promoting recovery at every level of care.
7. Elective — 1 month
The Elective rotation allows fellows to pursue individualized learning experiences. Fellows may deepen their expertise in a core rotation or explore new areas of interest within addiction medicine or related subspecialties.
